Before the Night Takes You Away

 

One day you came and told me you had to go.

Silently, I looked at you with all my heart but couldn’t find the words to say.

I didn’t know what you wanted to hear from me and didn’t know what I wanted to hear from you.

I stood there in silence and watched in loneliness as you turned and walked away.

I wanted to reach out and hold you back, but you slowly disappeared into the night.

I stood there thinking about tomorrow without you not knowing what I’d said or done to make you walk away.

I wondered if it was just you who wanted to go.

I wanted to make you happy and wanted things to always be perfect, but I couldn’t be the person making all the things in this world as lovely as they could get.

You never shared your thoughts with me and never told me what you were feeling inside your heart.

Maybe I was always the one who thought too much about us.

Maybe I was the one who thought we could be together forever.

In reality, you were the one who was thinking of someone else.

I can’t change the future and can’t say anything to change tomorrow because no matter what I say now, you’d never come back.

You’ll never love me like you once promised you would.

Poem: Alone Again with Love

  Alone Again with Love I remember the times we were together. They were the happiest moments in my life. All those memories were so happy, but now, there’s nothing here with me. I’m alone without you, with no one to talk to. Can you see you’ve hurt me badly? My love for you was true. What’s left to say when you’ve left me? Nights are cold without you, and sometimes I wish I’d never met you because then my heart won’t be broken right now. Had I never met you, then my dream won’t be dying today, and I’d be happy without you here. Had you not loved me the way you did, I wouldn’t have to remember of those loving nights together. Had you not spent those nights holding me tightly and sweetly, I wouldn’t be in pain today. Now, there’s only an image of you and nothing else. The love songs and the passing hours remind me of you. A Look Back - Favorite Author: Lois Duncan

One of my favorite authors whose novels I loved to read during my teenage years was Lois Duncan. I was very sad to hear of her passing in 2016.  I read many of her teen, horror, thriller books including I Know What You Did Last Summer, Down a Dark Hall, Summer of Fear, and Killing Mr. Griffin. For me, the early 1990s represented a time when teen horror fiction novels were on the rise. Duncan was one of the authors who really captivated my interests even though most of her novels were written in the 1970s. However, the novels really pulled in a wider audience in the 90s with the teen/horror/thriller/suspense genre picking up thanks to many other authors including Christopher Pike, R.L. Stine, etc. Many of Duncan's novels are also not that long, which was how many of the young teen fiction novels were during this period.
